Scope-sensitive restriction and emphasis

Control what only, also, even and negation apply to in complex statements.

The rule

Check exactly what nur, nicht or another focus expression restricts. Changing position or stress can change the claim, especially with quantities and reasons.

nur diese Daten · nicht alle · nicht weil …, sondern weil …

Focus particles restrict or extend alternatives associated with a particular phrase; moving the particle can change the claim.

nicht alle and keine are different: a partial denial does not necessarily mean a universal denial.

nicht weil …, sondern weil … rejects a reason while preserving the underlying event, unless context signals another scope.

Details and useful distinctions

auch and sogar add an alternative with different expectations; the speaker’s assumed alternatives need to be recoverable.

Ambiguity between clause-level and constituent-level negation can require stress, context or an explicit paraphrase.

Practise this grammar

Write the contrasting alternative explicitly and test whether the sentence still says exactly what you intend.
