Interactional particles and tone
Interpret conversational stance and choose particles appropriate to a real interaction.
The rule
Modal particles connect an utterance to shared knowledge or expectations. Choose them for the interaction and tone; a literal English equivalent is rarely enough.
das ist ja … · erklär doch … · was denn? · ruhig / bloß / eben
Modal particles relate a statement to shared knowledge, expectations or the interaction; they normally remain unstressed inside the clause.
ja can present something as shared or newly obvious; doch can appeal to common knowledge or counter an assumption.
denn is common in genuine questions; mal can soften an invitation or request, but tone depends on context and intonation.
