Concession and contrast in formal prose
Distinguish conceded facts, hypothetical concessions and direct contrasts.
The rule
Distinguish a conceded fact from a hypothetical “even if”. Choose the connector for that relationship, then maintain the matching mood and word order.
wenngleich … · auch wenn … · selbst wenn … · zwar …, aber …
obwohl and wenngleich typically concede a proposition while the main clause presents a contrasting outcome.
auch wenn can concede an actual circumstance or a hypothetical one; selbst wenn emphasises that even this condition would not change the result.
wohingegen and adversative während contrast two propositions rather than necessarily expressing an unexpected outcome.
