Restricted and exceptional conditions
Express conditions, limits and exceptions with sofern, soweit, vorausgesetzt and es sei denn.
The rule
Choose conditions precisely: sofern qualifies, soweit limits extent or knowledge, and es sei denn introduces an exception. Preserve each connector’s required clause structure.
sofern … · soweit … · vorausgesetzt, dass … · es sei denn, …
sofern gives a condition or qualification; soweit can limit the extent of a claim or refer to the speaker’s available knowledge.
vorausgesetzt, dass makes a prerequisite explicit. A clause without dass can have a different, often verb-second, structure.
es sei denn introduces an exception. Without a further connector, the following clause commonly has main-clause order.

Common mistakes
Incorrect: Sofern die Daten vollständig sind, kann wir beginnen.
Correct: Sofern die Daten vollständig sind, können wir beginnen.
The initial condition is followed by plural finite können.
Incorrect: Soweit die Mittel reichen, unterstützt wir das Projekt.
Correct: Soweit die Mittel reichen, unterstützen wir das Projekt.
The initial extent-limit clause is followed by plural unterstützen.
Incorrect: Wir stimmen zu, vorausgesetzt, dass die Regeln gilt.
Correct: Wir stimmen zu, vorausgesetzt, dass die Regeln gelten.
Plural Regeln controls gelten in the prerequisite clause.
Incorrect: Der Kurs findet statt, es sei denn, die Lehrerin sein krank.
Correct: Der Kurs findet statt, es sei denn, die Lehrerin ist krank.
Bare es sei denn is followed by main-clause finite ist.
Incorrect: Nur wenn du zustimmst, beginnt wir.
Correct: Nur wenn du zustimmst, beginnen wir.
The initial only-if condition is followed by plural finite beginnen.
Details and useful distinctions
With es sei denn, dass the embedded clause has final finite verb. Do not mix the two structural patterns.
Only if and unless reverse different logical relationships; state the underlying condition in plain words before translating.
