Unreal comparison: als ob and als
Describe an appearance or comparison without asserting that it is factual.
The rule
Als ob introduces a comparison whose literal truth may be distanced. Without ob, comparison als puts the finite verb immediately after als.
als ob er … wäre · als wäre er … · als ob er … getan hätte
als ob introduces a comparison that can distance the speaker from its literal truth.
Konjunktiv II is common for an unreal comparison; an indicative or Konjunktiv I can occur with different perspective or register.
After als ob, the finite verb normally stands at the end. With als alone, it follows als immediately.
