Impersonal and recipient passive
Describe activities without an accusative patient and foreground a recipient.
The rule
An impersonal passive may lack a nominative subject and uses a singular verb. Recipient passive makes the receiver the subject while retaining the thing received.
hier wird gearbeitet · ihm wird geholfen · sie bekommt etwas erklärt
An impersonal passive can have no nominative subject: hier wird gearbeitet. The finite verb is singular.
A dative complement remains dative in the werden-passive: dem Gast wird geholfen, not der Gast wird geholfen.
Initial es may fill the first field in es wird getanzt; it disappears when another phrase occupies that field.

Recipient passive has lexical and register restrictions; not every dative verb permits it equally naturally.
