Konjunktiv II: past
Discuss unreal past situations and regrets.
The rule
For an unreal past, use hätte or wäre + participle. With a modal governing another infinitive, use hätte + lexical infinitive + modal infinitive.
hätte/wäre + Partizip II · modal: hätte + infinitive + modal infinitive
Choose hätte or wäre using perfect auxiliary logic.
Place the participle at the end of a simple unreal-past clause.
Use wenn for the unreal condition and Konjunktiv II past in both clauses.
