The dative: first steps

Recognize common indirect objects and dative articles.

The rule

Learn dative verbs with their objects. The articles are dem, der, dem and plural den; plural nouns usually also add -n unless they already end in -n or -s.

der → dem · die → der · das → dem · plural die → den + noun-n

Ask Wem?—to whom or for whom?—to find a dative person. The subject remains nominative and a directly affected thing can remain accusative.

Masculine and neuter use dem, feminine uses der, and plural uses den. Most plural nouns also add -n unless they already end in -n or -s.

With geben, the receiver is dative and the thing is accusative: Ich gebe dem Kind das Buch. Case, not position alone, identifies each role.
