Two-way prepositions: movement
Contrast location and direction.
The rule
With two-way prepositions, accusative marks a destination or new spatial relation; dative locates something. Movement alone does not decide the case.
Wohin? + accusative · Wo? + dative
Use accusative when an object or person crosses into a new spatial relation; use dative when the sentence locates it.
Pairs such as stellen/stehen, legen/liegen, setzen/sitzen, and hängen/hängen make the change-versus-position contrast visible.
Activity verbs can still take dative when the action happens inside one location: Die Kinder laufen im Park.
